Questions nurseries ask us.

If your question isn't here, ask us in a demo. We'd rather show you than tell you.

The product

What is OperoNMS, in one sentence?

Nursery management software that plans your production, space and orders, follows every batch on the nursery floor with an offline Android tablet, and gives your customers their own portal.

Is it an ERP?

No. OperoNMS does the nursery's planning and operations, and leaves the general ledger and invoicing to the systems you already use. On request, it can connect to them, so orders and tray charges don't have to be retyped. See integrations.

What kinds of nurseries is it for?

Forestry seedlings and clones, vegetable and herb seedlings, macadamia and other grafted trees, pot and bedding plants, trees and shrubs, cut flowers and young plants, and contract growers, from a single family nursery to a multi-site division. See solutions by nursery.

How does it decide what to sow?

Every day it compares accepted orders with what your batches will have ready, using each growing recipe's phases and expected losses, and what the floor has actually counted. Where an order would be short and sowing must start within four weeks, it proposes a batch with the start quantity, trays and sow-by date. A manager accepts or declines it. Try the arithmetic yourself.

Does it ever release a plan or batch on its own?

Never. OperoNMS proposes; your managers decide, and the reason for every decision is kept.

Can we run several nurseries in it?

Yes. Each nursery has its own layout, recipes and stock; species, customers, trays and roles are shared across the group. Orders route themselves to the closest nursery that grows the species, and spare plants move between nurseries on the surplus stock board.

Does it handle mother hedges and cuttings?

Yes. Hedges are batches with a harvest yield model. You record cuts, and OperoNMS balances the cuttings expected each week against the rooting batches planned, because cuttings cannot be stored. Hedge health follows rooting. See hedges and cuttings.

Setup

How long does it take to get started?

Most nurseries are planning in OperoNMS within a few weeks of signing: we create your organisation, then load your camps, tunnels, beds, species and first recipes with you, and train each role. See onboarding.

Do we need to install anything?

No. OperoNMS runs in the browser, hosted in South Africa, at your own address such as yournursery.operonms.co.za. Tablets get the OperoNMS Android app.

Our recipes are in growers' heads. Is that a problem?

That's where most nurseries start. We sit with your growers and write the first recipes together: phases, durations, environments, densities and expected losses. After the first season, each recipe's actuals feedback shows where to adjust it.

Can we bring our existing data?

Yes. Your layout, species, customers and open orders are set up with you during onboarding. Loading them from your spreadsheets is available on request.

Is it hard to learn?

It is made for growers, not computer experts. Each person sees only the menus their role needs, the tablet does five things, and every screen has a Help button that opens the help page for that screen.

Floor & tablet

What tablet do we need?

Any Android 10 or later tablet. Budget tablets work; rugged Zebra and Honeywell devices with built-in scanners work out of the box. The camera reads QR and Code 128 labels. See devices.

What happens when there's no signal?

The tablet carries on. Labels, batches, beds, quality status and today's dispatches are already on it. Counts, losses, bed scans and dispatch loading are saved and signed on the tablet, and sync when signal returns. People can even sign in offline with a six-digit PIN, for a window you set (72 hours by default).

Can someone change a count afterwards?

No. Each capture is signed by the tablet with the quantity inside the signature, and records are append-only: a mistake is corrected by a further count, never by editing the original. Every capture shows who recorded it.

Do floor workers need their own accounts?

No. General workers use shared, enrolled tablets. Supervisors and managers have their own accounts.

How are labels printed?

From the batch record or by clicking a bed on the layout, as print-ready PDFs for A4 sticker sheets or 50 × 25 mm and 100 × 50 mm thermal labels.

Customers

Who can use the customer portal?

Your own plantation foresters and silviculture managers, and external customers. Each sees only their own orders, limited to the plantations they look after.

Will customers see our internal prices?

No. Customers see no prices beyond their own. Internal price lists, other customers' orders and the surplus board are never shown. The supplying nursery is named only once it has accepted the order.

We run an annual order round. Does it support that?

Yes, if you want one. By default every order is firm from the day it is placed. Switch on the optional order cycle and orders firm up from projected to adjusted to actual, with dates, reminders and rules for what can change at each stage. It applies to your internal plantation customers unless you choose otherwise per customer. See the order cycle.

Other systems

Which systems does it connect to?

Excel, scanners and label printers, and your company sign-in (Microsoft Entra ID, Okta, Google Workspace). ERP, Sage, QuickBooks, ePOS and CSV/SFTP file exchange are available on request.

Can we get our data into Excel?

Every list downloads as PDF, Excel or CSV exactly as filtered on screen. Excel workbooks include charts, totals and an "About this report" sheet. Reports can be saved and scheduled.

Data & security

Where is our data?

It's hosted on Amazon Web Services in the Cape Town region, walled off from every other organisation. Traffic passes through Cloudflare's global network, and email through Microsoft. See security.

Can OperoSystems staff see our data?

Not routinely through the application. Those who administer our AWS account can in principle reach the data, and emergency access exists for when nobody at your nursery can be reached. See how our staff can reach your data.

How do you handle POPIA?

OperoNMS holds little personal information and supports export. As the responsible party you decide how it is used; we give you the tools. See POPIA.

Who can approve what?

Sixteen ready-made roles you can adjust. Wherever one person records and another approves, OperoNMS insists they are different people. See separation of duties.

Pricing

How much does it cost?

A monthly subscription for your organisation and the modules you choose, priced by sites and users, invoiced monthly in rand and paid by EFT. We quote for your nursery after a demo. See pricing.

Is there a free trial?

We start new nurseries as pilots, with hands-on setup and a written agreement for scope, length and cost. Book a demo to find out more.

Pilot programme

Be one of our first pilot nurseries.

We work closely with a small group of nurseries to set up OperoNMS on their sites. You get hands-on setup and training, your own nursery's layout and recipes loaded with you, and a direct say in what we build next.
